DON'T Never Use a rolled up newspaper or the flat of your hand to punish your puppy, this will result in a breakdown of trust between dog and handler. Never punish your dog for not coming when called, this will result in reluctance to come next time. Teach the recall properly from the beginning. Don't expect your dog to understand your phrases and sentences, he will learn a lot quicker from single commands, followed by explanation of what is required.
DO Remember that there is a big difference between punishment an correction. Dogs do not need to be punished but do need to be corrected from doing things of which we don't approve, therefore make sure to explain properly what is required. If correcting undesirable behavior, remember to praise good behavior. Remember that not only should you play the roll of leader to your dog, you should also be your dogs best friend, that is where skill and understanding come in.
