Tips For Training Your Puppy

Start as you mean to go on - Make decisions about where and what the dog is allowed to do in the house then write them down on a list and be firm in sticking to them.

Don't believe the old wives tales such as 'rub his nose in it to make him ‘house-clean’ Paper train your dog by using some of the produces available in the pet store - one of my favourites is the puppy training pads - they have a scent on them which encourages the dog to perform once it is smelt - I discovered that if you let the pup use the pad then put a new one next to it, he will then use the new one more readily because of the stronger odour of the old pad, keep this method of replacing the pad until he knows that this is the spot where he goes to the toilet - every time you see the pup looking and sniffing around for a place to do his business take him quickly to the pad, this will lessen the amount of accidents he has and it increases the speed at which the pup learns to go in the correct place.  Don’t forget that eventually you want him to go outside and so as you gradually move the pad closer to the door - initially you will need to put the pad outside so that the pup still knows where he is supposed to do his business, after a few days you can reduce the size of the pad and eventually dispense with it altogether.  Once a dog is clean in the house you will find that unless he is sick or extremely upset he does not want to soil in house and accidents should be few.  But initially accidents do happen and should be cleaned up thoroughly (again using a pet product designed to remove the odour- so he is not attracted to the same spot again) this should definitely be done without fuss or by drawing attention to the issue. If the accidents become frequent go back to the pads and retrain your dog as before - if this does not work seek professional advice.

Don't use rolled up newspapers to chastise. This will result in hand-shyness. Instead ignore him for a short period, turn your back on him, walk out of the room - he will quickly get the message you are not happy with him.

Do assert yourself enough to gain respect but remember that your dog does not want bullying.

Don't punish your dog by putting your dog out or in another room. Don't let your human logic harm your dog.
