Good Dog House Rules

Start as you mean to go on - Make decisions about where and what the dog is allowed to do in the house then write them down on a list and be firm in sticking to them.

A reformed toilet bowl drinker.

Do remember that if your dog is not impressed by your authority then he will make decisions for himself.

A little pup sitting on the sofa next to you is cute but remember this pup will grow very quickly into a full size dog - then you will be sitting on the corner of the sofa or worse on the floor and fighting to keep him off the furniture.  When he is little keep him on the floor and sit on the floor with him to cuddle and play with him, this way he will never think that your nice furniture is his bed, this is especially true for you own bed.

Crate train him as soon as you get him by putting him in his create and giving him a toy and a few biscuits in the crate.  gradually increase the time he spends in the crate on his own until his sleeps in the create all night and goes into the create quite happily during the day when you want to go out or just for quiet time- this will reduce the damage caused by a puppy chewing up things through boredom.

It is easier to prevent a habit from forming than to try and stop the behaviour once it is started - use a baby gate to limit access to certain parts of the house.

Make sure your dog has access to his own toys and chews and knows that your belonging are out of bounds - when you see him getting hold of one of your items - go and get one of his toys, tell him 'NO' while taking your item away from him and then give him his own toy and amuse him with it for a minute or two - eventually he will get the message.
